All three field trials will be continued. External Researchers are invited to use these to obtain sample material for their own research questions.

Central Field Trials (CeFiT)

The research unit will continue to use the Central Field Trials established in 2007 (‘Trial A’) and 2009 (‘Trial B’) at research station Klein-Altendorf in Rheinbach near Bonn. In these trials, a forage crop with a homorhizous root system (tall fescue, Festuca arundinacea Schreb.), as well as two crops with allorhizous root systems, lucerne (Medicago sativa L.) and chicory (Cichorium intybus L.) were grown for 1, 2 or 3 years continuously. Generally, our field experiments have four field replications. In 2014 the field experiments will be in their 3nd and 5th years after the fodder crops were ploughed, allowing investigation of fodder crop effects in different successional stages of crop development.

Experimental Design Trials A,B,C

Additionally, a 3rd field trial (‘Trial C’) was established in 2012 at the same site with a design slightly modified but still providing comparability with trials A and B. Plot size in ‘Trial C’ is 9.5 x 12 m. The fodder crops will be grown for one or two years only. This design provides the opportunity for investigating root and shoot growth of crops grown subsequently after fodder crops from 2014.
